First Bit Of Analysis

In our practice group of Me, Sam and Sean we did a brief analysis for the music video Bon Jovi- It's My Life.

The video starts with a young man watching the concert on the internet and then recieves a phone call from his girlfriend telling him that Bon Jovi are in the city and she is at the concert he is watching. He sees her online and she asks him to come down and see them. To get there as quickly as possible he starts to freerun across the city to the convert in less than 5 minutes.

It attracts people because of its fast pace and most teenagers enjoy watching freerunning so it matches well together.

Genre: Rock
Audience: 16-30 Male. The man in the music video may not have a lot of money and lives in a small flat with his mum so this helps relate to this audience.

This music video isn't like other music videos of this genre because not many rock videos involve freerunning, however this genre generally has concerts in their music videos.

Lyrics: They are suggesting that young people want to be in control of their own life and it relates back to freerunning, suggesting freedom.

Image of the Artist:

The music video is trying to portray young people breaking off from society and live their own life.

M-E-S, Colours, Characters, Locations and Props: The young man lives in a flat as mentioned before and he lives with his mother. Typically in music the protagonist is usually not wealthy. The colours used in his flat are very dull and gloomy, giving us the impression of a typical young person.

The image of the artist is quite casual so people can connect to it. When the man fall through the sunroof of the van, he is surrounded by strong, angry men which relates to the theme of young men getting into trouble.

Camera Angles and Editing:

Synchronised Editing: The cutting rate matches the beat of the song to emphasise the pace.
How does the video start? It starts with a wide angle shot of the man typing on the computer in his bedroom.
Unusual Editing Techniques: Slow motion and freeze frame of the man jumping off the bridge.
Camera angles frequently used: High angles are used when the man is at home acting normally, low angles are used when the man is freerunning.

Representation:

Various representations (e.g. women): The man is the person who has to run across the city and his girlfriend is already at the concert.
